s. f, lœ or Eagle wood, Aquillaria agallocha, Nat. Ord. Aquillariaceæ. A yellowish white rather hard wood with a pleasant odour. The fragrance is due to the rotting of the wood, and the best specimens are, therefore, prepared by burying. They sink in water. It contains an aromatic resin, and is used as a stimulant and cordial in rheumatism, gout and nerve affections. The term alœ wood has nothing to do with alœs, but is a corruption of the Arabic name Al-úd Formerly it was much used in Europe. In Siam the wood forms the heart wood of certain trees, the sap wood is lighter and less odorous. Lign alœs is the product of Alœxylon agallochum of Cochin China:—úd salap, s. m. the Paonia of Dioscordies. The Pæonia cerallina, Nat. Ord. Ranunculaceæ.
