s. m, fflower, Carthamus tinctoria, Nat. Ord. Compositæ. The oil is used medicinally. The seeds are laxative, the flowers are used in jaundice. The petals contain carthamic acid, which forms rouge when mixed with talc, and mixed with carbonate of soda, card rouge which is colourless till applied to the skin. The petals are used as a rose coloured dye and to adulterate saffron; i. q. Kasumbhá, Kasuṇbhá.
