KHILLAT

s. f, Corrupted from the Arabic word Ḳhilat. A dress, a robe of honour bestowed by the ruling power on an inferior as a mark of distinction. Usually the khillat consists of pieces of cloth not made up. It may consist of arms, jewels, or other valuables, without any articles of attire, although in most cases a turban and shawl form part of the gift. A complete khillat may include arms, or a horse, or an elephant. A khillat is sometimes given to a person invested with a new office, or as a token of confirmation in one that he holds. It is likewise presented in person or sent by men of rank to visitors of distinction. Corruption of the Arabic word Ḳhilt. One of the four humours of the human body, Muhammadans reckon four, Hindus five:—khillat deṉí, bhanáuṉí, v. n. To invest with a robe of honour:—khillat milt, a. s. m. Intermixed, confused; disorder, confusion.
