CHHANCHHAN

s. f, The tinkling sound of ornaments worn on the feet; c. w. karná;—s. m. (M.) The planet Saturn, Saturday; a small mound at the cross-streets of towns on which Hindus offer oil and burning lamps on Saturdays in order to avert the evil influence of Saturn:—chhanchhan bale, kul balá ṭale. When the chhanchhan burns all calamities are averted. Hindus repeat these words as they place the lamps as offerings.
