JHAṆḌ

s. f, The lanugo, the hair on the head of a new born child, hair two or three inches long, the first hair that grows on a child's head. It is customary amongst Hindus to take boys to the temple of Deví or some other sacred place to cut off the jhaṇḍ. In Multan and other places west of Lahore it is customary to take both Hindu and Muhammadan boys to the shrines of Muhammadan saints and there cut off the jhaṇḍ. The ceremony includes an offering to those in charge of the shrine. This ceremony, called jhaṇḍ laháwaṉ or utární, is in the case of boys performed several times till puberty, but only once in the case of girls, and then at home, not at the shrines.
