PATÁL

Meaning in English2

s. m, ne of the seven regions under the earth or towards the South Pole which are the abode of demons and the Nagas. The seven are A-tal, Vi-tal, Su-tal, Rasá-tal, Talá-tal, Maká-tal and Pa-tál. The last mentioned is not unoften used as a generic term for the whole of the seven; it is also the name of a town in the world of the Serpent race. More generally used Pa-tál signifies the nether regions, the regions below the earth; infernal regions, hell:—patál jaṇtar, s. m. An apparatus for the calcination or sublimation of metals which is formed of two earthen pots, the upper being inverted over the lower, the two are cemented at their necks, and placed in a hole containing fire:—uk dí jaṛ patál tíkar laggí hoí hai.
