PAHUL

s. f, The initiatory rite of Sikkhism. Five Sikhs, who are already initiated, make sherbet by dissolving patáshás in water. Each in turn stirs the solution with an iron instrument, reciting sacred texts the while. This solution is the Amrat, a portion is sprinkled on the face and head of the candidate, the remainder is passed round and is sipped by all the initiated present out of the same cup. The new disciple then bathes and is exhorted strictly to maintain the principles of Sikkhism; c. w. deṉí, laiṉí.
