PITAR

s. m. pl. pitráṇ, father, forefather, an ancestor; manes of the dead:—pitráṇ de arpaṉ, s. m. Gifts in honour of deceased relatives, distributed at the sharádhás or funeral ceremonies:—pitar pakkh, s. m. The first or dark fortnight of Assú when the Hindus celebrate the funeral rites to the manes of their ancestors:—pitar tarpaṉ, s. m. An offering of water to the dead:—pitráṇ núṇ páṉí deṉá, v. a. To offer a libation of water poured out of the right hand as an offering to the manes:—pitar salerí, s. m. Petroselinum sativum, Nat. Ord. Umbelliferæ cultivated in the plains.
