POHLÍ

s. f, The seed of Indian saffron (commonly used in the plural); also the name of a thorny plant (Carthamus exyacantha, C. Tinctoria, Nat. Ord. Composita) abundant in many of the more arid tracts of the Panjab from Ambala up to Peshawar. In many places the seeds are parched and eaten alone, or with wheat, or are ground and mixed with wheaten flour for bread. In some places an oil extracted from the seeds, is burned and eaten. It is also used medicinally. Also the same as Shakákal misrí, Paháṛí gájar which see;—A plant Cousinia calcitrapæformis, Nat. Ord. Compositæ) not uncommon wild in the Salt Range:—pohlíáṇ dá tel, s. m. The oil of the Pohlí seeds.
