PALLÁ

s. m. (M.), ) The casing of wattled brush wood or of reeds which encloses a stack of straw or grain; hence used for the stack itself with its casing; the two concentric walls of grass-ropes which are placed on the top of the masonry cylinder of a well and between which the earth from the well is placed in order to sink the cylinder. The pallá or pal rests on beams placed across the masonry, and, as earth is brought from the bottom of the well by divers, it is placed between the walls of the pallá and the cylinder sinks from the weight:—pallá or pal badhan, v. a. To erect an apparatus of this description:—palle bannhṉá, v. n. lit. To fold up; to bear in mind, to ponder well; to regard none:—pallá chhuḍáuṉá, v. a. To get rid or quit of:—pallá páuṉá, v. a. To weep with the face covered for the dead, as women do by appointment; to spread a cloth for receiving pice as faqírs do:—hatth ná palle te kísá halle. He has nothing in his hand or in his purse and shakes his pockets:—palle wichch dáṉe, rann paí pakeṇdí máṉe. The grain is still in the stack, but the woman is cooking her cake.—Prov. She is counting her chickens before they are hatched.
