ਮਹਵਾ

MAHWÁ

Meaning in English2

s. m, The tree Bassia latifolia, Nat. Ord. Sapotaceæ. It does not appear to be indigenous in the Panjab, but planted trees (from seed) are not uncommon in and near the Siwalik tract, up to the Rávi, and single specimens may be seen as far from the hills as Ambala and Batála. The wood is said to be cinnamon-coloured, close, hard, heavy, and durable and is used for building in Kangra. An oil extracted from the seed is used as food and burned, and is also used to adulterate ghee, and spirits are extracted from the flowers.
