a., ad, Great, exalted, illustrious, very, extremely;—s. m. The metallic plate or wire, with which the two ends of an ivory armlet are joined:—maháṇ aprádh or dosh, s. m. A heinous sin or crime:—maháṇ báhman, barahmaṉ, s. m. A caste of Brahmans that receive the offerings made by Hindus on occasion of the death of any person:—maháṇ bhárat, s. m. A great war, a famous epic poem of about 2,15,000 lines. It is the narrative of the great war of the Bharatas and describes the fluctuating fortunes, wars and lives of the sons of the two brothers Dhritarashtra and Pandu, descendants of Kuru and Bharata of the lunar line of kings who reigned near Hastinapura.
