s. m. f, ed colouring matter extracted from gum lac; a small tree, the wild pear (Pyrus Kumaonensis, P. Aria, Naf. Ord. Rosaceæ) common in many parts of the Panjab Himalaya up to the Indus. The smallish fruit ripens about October, and looks well, but is very indifferent eating even when half rotten, in which state it is generally consumed by the people.
