s. f, The plant Lawsonia inermis, Nat. Ord. Lythrarieæ. Also its leaves, commonly used for staining the hands and feet, the nails, head and beard of a red colour; an ark or tabernacle carried in solemn procession by Muhammadans, especially on the eve of the anniversary of the death of Kásim, son of Hussain, which happened when he was about to marry. 2. In the Jhelum District Elsholtzia Polystychya, Nat. Ord. Labiatæ used as a dye to the south of Kashmir:—Amám Mahiṇdí, s. m. A prophet according to Muhammadans who will come down from Heaven a little before the Day of Judgment:—jaṇglí mahiṇdi, s. f. (Ammannia auriculata, A. vesicatoria, Nat. Ord. Lythrarieæ.) which is used for blistering purposes, in parts of India:—waláití mahiṇdí, s. f. A plant (Myrtus communis, Nat. Ord. Myrtaceæ) occasionally grown in the Panjab by Natives and Europeans. The leaves are given in cerebral affections, and for flatulence;—mahiṇdí láuṉá, v. a. To stain the palms with mahiṇdí; i. q. Maiṇdí.
