s. f. pl. mircháṇ, epper.—kálí mirch, s. f. Black Pepper Piper nigra, Nat. Ord. Piperaceæ, used as a condiment, and medicinally as a stimulant, in cholera and other diseases, also locally as a rubefacient, and in various skin diseases and piles.—lál mirch, s. f. Red Pepper. This the product of many varieties of Capsicum. C. annuum, C. baccatum, bird pepper, C. grossum, the large round kind. C. frutescens the ordinary shrubby plant, C. Nepalensis, C. purpurcum, C. conoides, C. pyramidale, Nat. Ord. Solanaceæ. Red pepper is an important article of diet, and is also used medicinally. C. Fastigiatum yields the true Guinea or Chilli pepper, the small shining orange coloured pod. This is the variety most often used medicinally:—harí mirch, s. f. green chillies:—kaṇghol mirch, s. f. See Kaṇkol:—mircháṇ laggníáṇ, v. n. To smart, to feel a smart; met. to be much vexed, to be irritated.
