s. m, large drum; the Maple. (Acer Cultratum. A. Sterculiaceum, Nat. Ord. Acerineæ.) A tree very common about Murree there called "trikanna or trikudna." The wood is not valued. The knots are made into ornamental cups which sell for a vevy high price in Tartary;—The Eleusyne corocana, Nat. Ord. Gramineæ. An inferior autumn crop sown when prospects are poor. The grain is somewhat bitter and indigestible. It is one of the foods lawful for Hindus on fast days. It will keep any length of time and is never attacked by insects. The stalk is flat, and is exceedingly tough and strong, and the crop is gathered by plucking off the heads and leaving the stalk standing. Straw rope is made from the stalk. Monkeys are said to prefer it to other crops:—maṇdal rájá jad seke tad tájá. Maṇdal is a king (of foods), whenever warmed (up) it is (as good as) fresh; i. q. Maṇdwá, Marwá, Chalodrá and in the hills Kodá.
