s. m, (Poṭ.) A small tree (Rhododendron arboreum, Nat. Ord. Ericaceæ) common at many places in the Himalaya and also found Trans-Indus. The gorgeous flush of crimson flowers adorns some of the hill stations about March, but occasionally trees will flower as early as 1st February with snow on the ground. The seeds are said to ripen about Christmas. Dishes are sometimes made of the wood. but it is soft, and weak, and mostly only used for charcoal, and for houses. Its young leaves are poisonous. The flowers have a sweet-sour taste, and are said to make a good sub-acid jelly. They are in some parts of the Himalaya eaten by the people who get intoxicated, if they consume a large number. They are alse medicinal and are applied to the forehead for headache on the Bias. A snuff, made from the bark of the tree, is excellent.
