s. m, 1. Gum Benjamin Styrax Benzoin: a gum resin obtained from Styrax benzoin, Nat. Ord. Styracaceæ. Used medicinally as a stimulant expectorant, and for various other purposes. 2. Frankincense, Olibanum, (oleum libaní). This is the product of various species of Boswellia, which inhabit Africa, Arabia and India. The India gum resin is the product of the Salai tree, (Boswellia thurifera. B. papyrifera, and allied species, Nat. Ord. Burseraceœ). It is the frankincense of the ancients, and the incense of the Romanists:—lobán mattí or lobán maití, s. f. A variety of Arabian Olibanum, the product of B. Frereana, also known as gum Elemi; i. q. Kuṇdal, Kundar, Saláí, Gaṇdá barojá.
