LAUR

Meaning in English2

s. m, (K., Poṭ.) A handsome tree (Acer cultratum, A. Sterculiaceum, Nat. Ord. Acerineæ.) which attains a considerable height, but the timber is not particularly valued. It is, however, close-grained and tolerably strong, and in Kangra is used for making ploughs, bedsteads, and Jámpáṉ poles. The juice of the leaves is said to be so acrid that it hurt the hands, but the leaves and twigs are in places, high in Hazarah especially much lopped for fodder:—laurá barúsh, s. m. A large spinous annual plant (Echinops nivea, Nat. Ord. Compositæ,) with tomentose leaves, which is not uncommon in the drier tracts of the Punjab Himalaya up to near the Indus. In various parts the leaves are used for making tinder.
