LACHCHHMÍ

Meaning in English2

s. f, Corrupted from the Sanskrit word Lakshmí. The name of the goddess of good fortune and beauty. Identified with the Srí of the later mythology and wife of Vishnu. According to the legend in the Ramayana (I.45, 40-43) she (like the Venus of the West) sprang from the Sea foam when the Ocean was churned for Amritá; she is called Padmá, because she holds a lotus, or because according to one legend she appeared at the creation floating on the waters on the petals of that flower. Kámdá from the Sanskrit Kamadá, because she gives what is desired. The name Srí is supposed to be identical with the Ceres of Roman mythology; wealth, riches, prosperity; a polite term for a girl, or a daughter, or daughter-in-law:—lachchhmí dí pújá, s. f. The Hindu worship of Lachchhmí on the Dewálí night:—lachchhmí ghar wichch áuṉí, v. n. To prosper, to thrive; to have a run of good luck; i. q. Lakhmí.
