It is concerned with the Soma ritual or moon plant ceremonies, and is arranged for chanting on such occasions by the Udgatri priests. It is a mere reproduction of portions of the Rig Veda, transposed, disjointed and scattered about. It has only 78 verses untraceable to the present recension of the Reg Veda. It also contains verses from the Atharva and white Yajur Veda. The Shám Ved is in two parts, the Archika and Slaubhika. Each portion has its own manual for chanting, the efficacy of the hymns depends largely on the proper utterance of each word according to the rules laid down. It has eight Brahmanas.
