SAMUṆD

s. m, Corrupted from the Sanskrit word Samudar. An ocean, a sea:—samuṇd jhagg, samuṇdar jhagg, s. f. (lit. the froth or foam of the ocean.) The dorsal bone of an extinct species of cuttle fish. It is used as a drug, being considered absorbent and antacid. In Europe it is only used for tooth powder and in the arts. It contains 80 parts of Carbonate of Lime in every hundred:—samuṇdar phul, s. m. The Barringtonia acutangula, Nat. Ord. Barringtoniaceæ. The root is bitter and in its properties resembles Cinchona. The seeds are aromatic and are used in Colic in parturition and in opthalmia:—samuṇd or samuṇdar sokh, s. m. A common field weed (Salvia plebeia, Nat. Ord. Labiatæ) found in the plains and in the Panjab Himalaya. The seeds are much used in the Hindu system as mustard, and for gonorrhœa and menorrhagia.
