s. m, Corrupted from the Arabic word Sáhib. An owner, possessor; a gentleman, especially a European gentleman; ruler, governor, chief; lord, master; sir; husband; a title of God:—sáhab jádá, jádí. s. m. f. The son or daughter of a gentleman:—sáhab salámát, s. f. (lit. peace to you, sir); a form of salutation, addressed to a superior, or when a Hindu and Muhammadan meet each other; intimacy, acquaintance:—jile wálá sáhab, sáhab jilá, s. m. An officer in charge of a district, a Collector or Deputy Commissioner.
