SIMRUṆG

Meaning in English2

s. f, The Alpine Rhododendron (Rhododendron campanulatum, Nat. Ord. Ericaceæ) which is rather rare in the Punjab Himalaya up to near the Indus. The whitish or lilac flowers appear from May to July, and the seed ripens in October. The leaves are sometimes poisonous to goats. Bees are very fond of the buff-coloured under-surface of the leaf, so that a few of the latter are put into or near hives. The leaves are exported to the plains, where they are medicinally used; they are considered errhine and are ground to be mixed with tobacco to form a medicinal snuff used in hemicrania. The smoke of this plant when used as fuel, is most acrid and irritant.
