s. m, The water Caltrop Trapa bispinosa, Nat. Ord. Halorageæ. The brown horny fruit with the long spines is the part used. It is planted in June and is ripe in November the deeper the water the better the crop. It is grown extensively in the Panjab and covers many miles of the waters in Cashmere. The produce of one seer of seed is about 20 maunds, in a good season. The fruit is eaten raw and cooked. A flour is made from it which is much used at Hindu festivals, and is also coloured pink and thrown about at the Holí:—sanggháṛe desí, s. m. The plant grown in the Punjab:—sanggháṛá púrbíyá, s. m. The down country saṇggháṛá which is superior to that grown in the Punjab.
