s. m, part of the Hindu marriage ceremony, an assertion on the part of the bride's parents that they give up their daughter and taking the bride's hands he (the Brahmin) puts it into the bridegroom's hands and makes him repeat a shaloká, giving his consent to the union and ties red thread in the both hands.
