By the grace of God at present auspecious moment I have been delighted by the arrival of happy news. The Barkzai Sardars destitute of foresight had arrived at the the dawn of the day with about 12000 horses and foot inhostility against my troops. Kanwar Nau-Nihal Singh took spear in his hand and prepared to oppose them with great presence of mind in concert with Hari Singh Nalwa and Mr. Court with a discharge of artillary and musketroy commenced. At length the Barkzais repinning at their timidity sought safety in flight and dispersed on all sides. Peshawar fell in the hands of officers of my Governmaent who extended their protection to the inhabitants of that place and their property. In the evening there was illumination in the city which was hailed both by Hindus and Muslims of the country as the harbinger of their deliverance from the hands of their tyrants. The victory of Peshawar is one of the greatest of the Sikh Raj and it was mostly due to generalship and boldness of Sardar Hari Singh Nalwa. (NAI/SPC 2: 12: 1834: 61)

ਭਾਵ ੧੨ ਮਈ ੧੮੩੪ ਨੂੰ ਜਿਹੜਾ ਪੱਤਰ ਮਹਾਰਾਜਾ ਰਣਜੀਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਕੈਪਟਨ ਵੇਡ (ਏਜੰਟ ਲੁਧਿਆਣਾ) ਨੂੰ ਲਿਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਸ਼ਬਦ ਸਨ:

ਰੱਬੀ ਕ੍ਰਿਪਾ ਸਦਕਾ ਇਸ ਸੁਭਾਗਸ਼ਾਲੀ ਅਤੇ ਕਲਿਆਣਕਾਰੀ ਸਮੇਂ ਮੈਂ ਖੁਸ਼ੀ ਭਰੀ ਖ਼ਬਰ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ ਬਹੁਤ ਅਨੰਦਤ ਹਾਂ। ਬਾਰਕਜ਼ਈ ਸਰਦਾਰਾਂ ਦੀ ਦਰਿੰਦਗੀ ਤੇ ਹੀਣਤਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਸਵੇਰ ਸਮੇਂ ੧੨ ਹਜ਼ਾਰ ਘੋੜ ਸਵਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਪਿਆਦਿਆਂ ਨੇ ਸਾਡੇ ਸੈਨਿਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਮਾੜਾ ਸਲੂਕ ਕੀਤਾ। ਕੰਵਰ ਨੌ ਨਿਹਾਲ ਨੇ ਨੇਜਾ ਪਕੜ ਕੇ ਹਰੀ ਸਿੰਘ ਨਲੂਆ ਨਾਲ ਮਿਸਟਰ ਕੋਰਟ ਦੇ ਤੋਪਖਾਨੇ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਸਲੇ ਦੀ ਵਰਤੋਂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਹੋਸ਼ ਹਵਾਸ ਨਾਲ ਜਦੋਂ ਹਮਲਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਤਾਂ ਬੁਜ਼ਦਿਲ ਅਤੇ ਡਰਪੋਕ ਬਾਰਕਜ਼ਈ ਆਪਣੇ ਬਚਾ ਲਈ ਜਿੱਧਰ ਰਸਤਾ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਦੌੜ ਗਏ। ਮੇਰੇ ਅਫ਼ਸਰਾਂ ਨੇ ਪਸ਼ੌਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਾਬੂ ਕਰ ਕੇ ਉੱਥੇ ਦੇ ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਜ਼ਿੰਦਗੀਆਂ ਅਤੇ ਦੌਲਤ ਨੂੰ ਬਚਾਇਆ। ਸ਼ਾਮ ਦੇ
