s. m. (M.), ) A groom's man, the best man. The two nights before a marriage among Muhammadans are called jággá and mel. On the day after the mel the bridegrooms party start for the bride's house, where the wedding takes place. The áṇhar remains in attendance on the bridegroom from the jággá till the bridegroom returns home after the wedding. The áṇhar, while on duty carries some weapon of iron. Before the people were disarmed it used to be a sword; now it is only a knife. His presence is supposed to be efficacious in keeping off jins, to whose attacks bridegrooms are especially exposed:—teḍí áṇhar dí kerhí níṇvan nisháníṇ; gúṛhiyáṇ akkhíṇ khair howí ṭurdá ṭor nimáníṇ.
