The disease is supposed to be caused by a continuance of cloudy weather, without wind, sun and rain. It occurs chiefly in wheat sown late. Sun-shine is the best remedy, and as the west wind disperses the clouds it is useful, but in itself it possesses no virtues. If the disease attacks the crops before the grain has formed the ears are empty; if after, the grain is small.
