a. pl. garíbáṇ, Corrupted from the Arabic word G̣aríb. Poor, destitute; gentle, humble, meek, mild;—garíb gurbá, s. m. Poor men, paupers:—garíb már, s. f. Oppression of the poor; misfortune:—garíb nawáj, s. m. Cherisher of the poor (commonly addressed by peons and menial servants to their masters especially to Europeans, or by subordinates to their superiors):—garíb hoṉá, v. n. To be poor, to be reduced to poverty;—garíbáṇ roje rakkhe díṉ waḍḍe áe. When poor men fast the day just lengthens out, i. e., they can not afford to feast well before and after the day's fast.—Prov. used of those poor men who begin to do any work but difficulties come in the way.
