s. m, The name of a great tribe, descendants of the Massagetae, which forms the backbone of the Punjab peasantry, (they are usually farmers and may be of any religion); a man of the Jaṭṭ caste; an agriculturist irrespective of his tribe or caste:—jaṭṭ japphá, s. m. Seizing and throwing down by main force, as practiced by Jaṭṭs and other rough plain people who are unacquainted with the arts of wrestlers, seizing suddenly in wrestling so as to preclude trick on the part of the opponent:—jaṭṭ búṭ jaṭṭ bahiṛ, jaṭṭ wahiṛ, wahaṛ, a. Ignorant, rude, clownish, coarse—jaṭṭ wáhad, jaṭṭ wádh, s. m. f. People of Jaṭṭ caste (in derision):—jaṭṭ biddiá, widdiá, s. f. The ingenuity and deceit which characterizes Jaṭṭs:—jaṭṭ te phaṭṭ baddhe chaṇge. A Jaṭṭ and wound are good when tied:—jaṭṭ ná jáṉe guṉ kará, chaná ná jáṉe wáh; usdá gurú sohágá usdá gurú sháh. Do a kindness to a Jaṭṭ and he will never heed it, plough for gram and it will never heed it, the spiritual teacher for the latter is the clod crusher, and for the former the money lender.
