a, Corruption of the Persian word Piyází. lit. Of or resembling an onion; a pinkish colour of a very light red or flesh colour;—s. f. A field weed (Asphodelus fistulosusi, A. clavatus, Nat. Ord. Liliaceæ) abundant in most parts of the plains of the Panjab so much so near Jhelum as to be troublesome to the cultivator. It is eaten as a vegetable in times of famine. The seeds are used medicinally.
