s. m, stone; a precious stone; met. anything hard, troublesome;—a. Hard, inflexible; hard-hearted, cruel; heavy:—patthar chaṭṭ, s. f. A species of fish; an inhabitant of a stony country, i. e., the hills;—a. (lit. a stone-licker.) Covetous, avaricious; stingy, miserly:—patthar chauth, s. f. The fourth day of the second fortnight in Bhádoṇ. It is considered a bad omen to see the moon on this day, if one has not previously seen her on the second day of this fortnight, and, to neutralise its malign influence, the unlucky person throws stones into his neighbour's house. The abuse he receives in return wards off the evil effects. Hence the name Patthar chauth:—patthar man, s. f. A shrub (Callicarpa incana, Nat. Ord. Verbenaceæ) frequent in the outer Himalaya. In Hazara the leaves heated are applied to rheumatic joints:—patthar paiṉe, v. n. To fall (stones, hail stones):—patthar phoṛ. s. m. A stone-cutter.
