a. s. m, Beautiful, tender, refined, delicate, elegant; a tree (Diospyros Lotus, Nat. Ord. Ebenaceæ) which is not uncommon in Kullu in the western part of the Jhelam basin, and appears to be common in some parts of the nothern Trans-Indus hills; one or two specimens were grown at Peshawar. It is a handsome little tree. In parts of Hazara, the male plant is called Gwalidar and the female Amlok; (i. q. Malok). Timber good but only available in Hazara. The fruit is purple about the size of a pigeon's egg and is valued, being eaten fresh or dry:—jaṭṭ malúk wasaleṇ dá ujáṛá. Though the Jáṭ becomes refined, there will be a great consumption of onions, i. e., he will not give up eating onion:—jaṭṭ malúk ṭarúá rumál. Though the Jáṭ becomes refined, he will still use a grass mat for a pocket-handkerchief.—Prov.
