s. m, gem, a precious stone:—rataṉ dasti, s. f. The Juniperus communis, Nat. Ord. Coniferæ, the berries are used medicinally as a diuretic as is the oil:—rataṉjot, s. f. A shrub (Potentilla nepalensis, Nat. Ord. Rosaceæ) not uncommon in the Panjab Himalaya. The reddish root is exported to the plains. It is employed in dyeing wool, and is used medicinally, being considered depurative, and is used externally, the ashes being applied with oil to burns;—A plant (Vinca rosea, Nat. Ord. Apocynaceæ) cultivated in the plains;—(Pot). The trees (Macrotomia euchroma, Nat. Ord. Boragineæ.) The bruised root of this is applied to eruptions and is sent to the plains as the officinal rataṉjot;—(Poṭ.) Also see Jabboloṭá, jamálgoṭá:—rataṉkát, s. m. A small tree (Andromeda ovalifolia, Nat. Ord. Ericaceæ) abundant in many parts of the Panjab Himalaya. The seeds and young leaves are poisonous to cattle and goats. The wood is soft and weak, and used for fuel and charcoal only.
