s. f, Corrupted from the Arabic word Láhad. A niche in the grave in which the corpse is deposited; a place where the corpse is washed. There are two forms, one excavated in the side of the grave, and the other is made in the bottom of the grave. It is roofed in with boards, over which earth is filled in. In this form, the central lahid is termed the qabr, and the upper grave the howdah. We have really a grave within a grave.
