s. m, celebrated thousand headed serpent famous in mythology, an emblem of eternity, king of the Nages inhabiting Patál. He forms the couch and canopy of Vishnu as he sleeps during the intervals of creation. He is said to bear the whole world on his hood, and when it is shifted from the hood of one head to another an earthquake results, and he is sometimes said to support the seven Patáls. According to some accounts he became incarnate in Balram.
