a, Black, of a dark colour;—s. m. A thief; a black snake, any snake:—kálá ádmí, s. m. A black man; a native of India (contemptuously so called by Europeans; also used by the people themselves):—kálá chor, s. m. (lit. a black thief) Any unknown person:—kálá dáṉá, s. m. A plant, the seeds of which (Ipomœa cœrulca) are purgative, and are found in all bazars. This plant when young, is used on the Beás as a pot-herb:—kálá dhatárá, s. m. The purple-thorn apple (Datura fastuosa)—kálá jírá, s. m. Carraway reeds:—kálá koilá, s. m. Black like charcoal:—múṇh kálá karná, v. n. (lit. to blacken one's face.) To break off all connection with another; to disgrace; to have connection with bad women; to expel:—kálá páṉí, s. m. (lit. black waters) Andaman islands used as a penal settlement:—kále wál, s. m. The pubic hair:—dál wichch kuchchh kálá hoṉá. v. n. To find something black in the pulse.—Prov. used where suspicion about the truth of anything exists:—koiliáṇ dí dilálí wichch máṇh kálá hoṉá, v. n. In selling charcoal one's face is blackened, i. e., who can touch pitch and be not defiled:—máṇh kálá te níle pair hoṉe, v. n. To be a black face and blue feet, i. e., to be a great rascal.
