GIDDAṚ

s. m, jackal; met. a timid person, a coward:—giddaṛ bolṉá, hawáṇgṉá, v. a. To howl (a jackal):—giddaṛ dák, dákh, s. f. A pretty climber (Cissus carnosa) which is found in several of the valleys, and occurs in parts of the plains. It is eaten by camels in the latter, and in Jammu the root ground with black pepper is applied to boils:—giddaṛ gummá, s. m. Altercation, disputation without foundation:—giddaṛ tamákkú, s. m. A plant (Heliotropium Europæum, Verbascum Thapsus) common throughout the Panjab plains. It is eaten by camels and goats:—giddaṛ wáṛ, s. f. lit. Jackal cotton: wild cotton:—giddaṛ dákh ná appṛe thúh kauṛí. The jackal could not reach the grapes, he spat and said they were sour.—Prov. used of a man who cannot get a thing after making his best exertions, when he despises the thing itself.
