s. m, Repetition, mentally or aloud of the names and attributes of God, or of portions of the various sacred writings, or generally of any matter of a religious nature; meditation, adoration; telling of beads:—Japjí, s. f. The opening portion of the Adí Granth, the holy book of the Sikhs. The Japjí consists of 38 Pauṛis and is the composition of Baba Nanak, the first Sikh Guru. It is also called the Japnísáṉ. The Japjí together with another passage of the Ádi Granth the Sat Sabad Hajárá, forms the portion for the prátákál or very early morning worship:—Jápjí, s. f. The opening portion of the Granth of Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th and last Guru of the Sikhs. The book is called the Dasweṇ Bádsháhí dá Granth. The Jápjí consists of 198 Pauṛís, and is the composition of Guru Gobind Singh. It has its own Sat Sabad Hajará, and is used in precisely the same way as the Japji:—jap karáuṉá, v. a. To get a Brahman to count his bead or read the Gáyatrí or any passage from the Shástars so that one may attain a desired end:—jap-karná, v. n. To worship, to adore, to repeat the name of God; to repeat any passage from the Shástars:—japmálá, s. f. A rosary:—jap tap, s. m. Religious service, worship, austere devotion.
