s. m, Corrupted from the Sanskrit word Jambú-dvipa. Name of one of the seven continents or large islands surrounding Mount Meru: so named from the Jambu trees (Gugenia Jambolana) which abound in it, or from a huge Jambu tree on Mount Meru, visible to the whole continent, and which marks the central division of the known world. Buddhists confine the term to India. Jainas to one of the five divisions of India.
