The larva of the moth Heliocopis cupido may be put to flight by sprinkling wood ashes over the plant. In autumn the plant is liable to the ravages of the larva of a weevil Deprescaria gossipiella. This destroys the cotton seed, and its attacks can be satisfactorily checked by scalding the seed before storing; this destroys the larva without impairing the vitality of the seed.
