s. m, The name of a lover who was enamoured of Lelí; one whom love has turned mad; a very thin weak person:—bed, bait majnúṇ, s. m. This tree (Salix Babylonica, Nat. Ord. Salicaceae) is very common, in the plains throughout the Panjab, being fully more abundant to the west, and frequently being of the graceful "weeping" type. It grows rapidly, and is easily raised in moist places by cuttings often stakes of considerable size, which are often planted to consolidate the banks of water ways. Its branches and twigs are largely used for baskets, wattles, weirs, and good cricket bats have been made from the wood. The leaves are reckoned tonic, possibly from the salicin in them:—majnúṇ khalíáṇ dekk jamáí, sir kuháṛe jhalle; Sassí shohdí, ráwal hoí, ráh Punnún de malle. Majnúṇ while standing caused grass to grow (on his head, and) on his head felt the the strokes, of evil fortune, the miserable Sassí wandered on the path keeping the road of Punnúṇ.—Song of Sassí Punnúṇ.
