SAGAN
ਅੰਗਰੇਜ਼ੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਅਰਥ2
s. m. (M.), ) the general name for all the ceremonies customary at births, circumcisions and weddings which are not prescribed by religion, and do not form part of the religious service or ritual. The sagans performed at weddings are the most numerous, and can be traced to three sources—(1) ceremonies which are relics of marriage by capture, as that of the bridegroom wearing a weapon of iron and being guarded by a bestman called Sabálá or áṇhar, the breaking a saucer (chhúní) on the threshold of the bride's house: (2) ceremonies adopted from the Hindu ritual, as the seating the bride and bridegroom on a basket (khárá); knotting their clothes together, and placing the knot seven times on the head of each (láwáṇ); (3) ceremonies connected with personal adornment, as rubbing the bodies of the bride and bridegroom with a mixture of flour, turmeric and oil; opening the plaits of the bride's hair, mutual presents of clothes;—v. n. (M.) To be able;—uṭhá ná sage, te lánat goḍián kúṇ. He cannot stand up and he blames his knees.—Prov.; c. w. áuṉá, ghallṉá, paiṉá, páuṉá.
