s. m, plant (Asparagus filicinus, Nat. Ord. Liliaceæ) common in the Panjab Himalaya. The root is exported from Kanawar to the plains. It is considered tonic and astringent. In Kanawar a sprig of this is put in the hand of small-pox patients as a curative measure;—The Asparagus racemosus, Nat. Ord. Liliaceæ which is furnished with small spines, common in parts of the Salt Range, Siwalik tract and other hills. Its root is used medicinally for man and beast:—sitáwar pattí, s. f. A plant (Asparagus Punjabensis, Nat. Ord. Liliaceœ) which has slender acicular leaves, common in parts of the plains of the Panjab, east of the Sutlej, as well as in the Salt Range, and on the Sutlej. In the Salt Range the twigs are used for scrubbing metallic vessels, and on the Sutlej sprigs of it are put in the beds of small-pox patients. The leaves are used medicinally.
